If you haven't experienced Michael Kaufman's talks, you haven't
discovered the magic and power of a public speaker. Drawing on his roots
in storytelling, his scholarly research, and his work around the world,
Michael's talks weave together humor, stories, and clear analysis for an
event that is educational and inspiring.
Dr. Kaufman's appearances at universities and colleges often combine a
keynote talk with workshops for particular groups of students (such as
residence life staff, those in fraternity system, a women's center), or
faculty or staff. Visits can include a classroom lecture, seminar or an
event aimed at alumni or the surrounding community.
High school visits often combine an auditorium talk with a workshop for
a smaller group of students, a class visit, a seminar for teachers, or an
evening event for parents. Topics include:
Date Rape: An Issue for All Guys Who Care. We've
all heard the jokes, but the truth is, most guys care. Men want to be in a
relationship that leaves everyone happy and fulfilled. Guys want the women
we care about to feel safe. This talk, full of stories, humor, and packed
with information, looks at the root causes of date rape and violence
against women. It challenges stereotypes and the actions of some men, but
does not dump on guys. Women have been working hard for the issue of date
rape to be taken seriously. Now men are starting to step up to the
plate.
The Biggest Sexual Organ in the World and the Three Secrets of
a Great Relationship. Relationships are hurt by bad
communication, by needs that don't get appropriately expressed, by
misunderstanding, by fear, and by one partner trying to control the will
of the other. Although this informative talk deals with some very serious
issues, it's fun and very positive. It gets to the heart and soul (and,
yes, other things) of how to build relationships that will make you feel
good. Focusing on building trust and good communications, it's a real
crowd pleaser.
Men and Women: Working Together for Change Between
women and men, the rules have changed, but there is no new rule book. This
talk or workshop addresses mis-communication, confusion, fear, and anger.
It looks at the importance of men listening to women's message, but also
understanding how men pay a price for their traditional roles. We discover
how both women and men will benefit from change and how we can work
together as allies for change.
Out in the World to Our Hometown: Working Together to End
Violence Against Women Michael draws on his experience with
the United Nations and international work to end violence against women.
He'll look at the terrible situation facing women in some countries who,
on a daily basis, experience a type of terrorism directed at them
specifically as women. And he'll talk about efforts right around the world
to challenge the many forms of violence against women, from date rape to
violence against women in the home. Michael analyzes the root causes of
this violence and charts an optimistic pathway for women and men to work
together to end the violence.
Finding our Power, Working for Change An inspiring
talk or workshop that looks at ways we've come to accept powerlessness in
our lives. We can learn to direct our energies to discover our personal
and collective strength and find practical ways to work together to find
solutions to the problems that surround us.
As well as, Dr. Kaufman provides individual Gender
Sensitivity Coaching with staff or students with individuals who have
been found responsible for sexual harassment. The goal? To find positive
ways to respond to a challenge most schools now face.
