1. TALKS & WORKSHOPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Dr. Kaufman is known for his powerful and magical talks and interactive workshops. Drawing on his roots in storytelling, his scholarly research, and his work around the world, Michael weaves together humor, stories, and clear analysis for an event that is educational and entertaining, positive and inspiring.
Auditorium talks for high school students fit within one period, but can be adapted to allow more time for questions and discussion.
But a better way to go is for a workshop that can last from two hours to a day. Some schools have done workshop series: Three to five sessions (each lasting one or two periods) over a course of several days or several weeks.
Topics for talks or workshops include:
- Man Talk! We all want good relationships. But we’re not always good at getting there. This fun and informative talk or workshop looks at the basic rules of good relationships. It looks at the basis of good communication and gives concrete tips. It talks about how to create mutual respect. And it talks, frankly (and yet respectfully of differences) about how to prevent dating violencet. Although aimed primarily at young men, it’s a talk or workshop that will also greatly benefit young women.
- Men and Women: Working Together for [a] Change. Age-old ideas of how girls and women should behave have been swept away. Now, the lives of boys and men are also beginning to change. This talk or workshop looks at how we create our ideas of being a proper woman or a real man. It looks at the costs of these ideas and how they are changing. It focuses in particular at how our ideas of manhood are changing and how this will be good for both women and men.
We Can End Violence Against Women! Far too many women face physical, sexual, and emotional violence. Far too many students come from homes where their mother experiences violence. This talk or workshop, drawing on Michael Kaufman’s pioneering work around the world and his role as co-founder of the White Ribbon Campaign, looks at the root causes of this violence and charts an optimistic pathway for women and men to work together to bring it to an end.

- We Can End Violence Against Women! Far too many women around the world face physical, sexual, and emotional violence. Far too many students come from homes where their mother experiences violence – this has a terrible impact not only on individual learning but, often, on group behavior. This talk or workshop, drawing on Michael Kaufman’s pioneering work around the world and his role as co-founder of the White Ribbon Campaign, looks at the root causes of this violence and charts an optimistic pathway for women and men to work together to bring it to an end. It helps teachers, coaches, and administrators develop practical skills for creating schools where there is an awareness of this issue and are free of all forms of violence against women.

It looks at the basis of good communication and gives concrete tips. It talks about how to create mutual respect. And it talks, frankly (and yet respectfully of differences) about how to prevent sexual assault.
- Red Light / Green Light: A Positive Approach for Ending Sexual Harassment. Let’s get beyond the misunderstandings, simplistic rules, and rigid categories. This talk or workshop creates a positive environment where men can drop any defensiveness and work alongside women to learn about the costs of sexual harassment for the workplace and for individual women and men. Most importantly, it helps us all learn to identify the problem, in particular, the subtle forms of harassment, and find practical ways to prevent harassment or respond in productive ways if it does take place.
