1. TALKS

Michael Kaufman is known for his powerful and entertaining talks at conferences and meetings.  Drawing on his roots in storytelling, his research, and his work around the world, Michael weaves together humor, stories, and clear analysis for an event that is educational, positive and inspiring.

Topics include:

  • The Gender Equality Advantage.  Between women and men, the rules changed — and yet, miscommunication, confusion, fear, and anger linger on. We discover how to improve productivity and effectiveness by addressing gender issues at the workplace.  We discover how the changing relations between women and men and redefinitions of womanhood and manhood create not only challenges, but enormous opportunities.  We learn how we all can benefit from change!
  • Red Light / Green Light:  A Positive Approach for Ending Sexual Harassment.  Let’s get beyond the misunderstandings, simplistic rules, and rigid categories. This talk creates a positive environment where men can drop any defensiveness and work alongside women to learn about the costs of sexual and other forms of harassment for the workplace and for individual women and men. Most importantly, it helps us all learn to identify the problem, in particular, the subtle forms of harassment, and find practical ways to prevent harassment or respond in productive ways if it does take place.
  • It’s Our Business, Too:  Why Violence Against Women is a Workplace Issue and How We Can End It.  Far too many women face physical, sexual, and emotional violence. This talk, drawing on Michael Kaufman’s pioneering work around the world and his role as co-founder of the White Ribbon Campaign, looks at the surprising reasons why this is a key issue for businesses and unions alike.  It also analyzes the root causes of this violence and charts an optimistic pathway for women and men to work together to end the violence.

3. LEADERSHIP TRAINING & COACHING: PREVENTING HARASSMENT, PROMOTING EQUALITY

Dr. Kaufman’s interactive and engaging workplace training and coaching focuses on preventing sexual harassment and promoting gender sensitivity.

Sexual harassment, poisoned work environments, and an inability to fully and respectfully integrate women are a problem in workplaces around the world.

The costs are many: harassment can lead to low morale, high legal fees, lost productivity, poor public image, and a workplace that pits some employees against others. Workplaces where women are not treated with respect and fairness lead to absenteeism, poor performance, and high turnover.

Unearthing the causes of these problems requires more than policy or a complaints procedure. It requires staff, managers, executives, as well as union officials, to understand attitudes and behaviors that lead to unlawful, disruptive, or unwelcome behavior.  It requires they know the positive role they can play in ensuring human rights at the workplace.

He draws on his “Red light / Yellow Light / Green Light” framework to give individuals a flexible tool to assess their own behavior and make good decisions about their workplace relationships. The result is greater empathy, self-knowledge and a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.

Michael Kaufman customizes his training packages for senior managers, executives, and human resource professionals with training sessions lasting from one-half to two days.  (Michael no longer does general staff training.)

Not only do participants develop a deeper understanding of the subtleties of the problem, but they develop practical tools to play a leadership role in preventing and responding to harassment and in promoting gender equality.

He also provides one-on-one coaching to managers and to individuals who’ve been found responsible for workplace harassment.

As well, Dr. Kaufman also designs on-line training packages. He was the lead author and content designer of the on-line training on sexual harassment, harassment, and abuse of authority for 55,000 United Nation’s staff and managers..
